process, and they work together to effect the amniochorionic system that is the main source for production not only of IL-8 (13 ) but also of various prostanoids (14, 15). Therefore, the highly variable concentrations of IL-8 in the CVS may be attributable to the extent of and/or the stages in which these factors contribute to cervical-decidualamniochorionic activation. However, the precise mechanism is to be investigated further. Moreover, the kinds of signals involved in increasing active Cp in CVS need to be better understood.

Detection of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 DNA in dried blood spots by a duplex real-time PCR assay.

A dried blood spot (DBS) is a well-accepted means for the collection, transport, and storage of blood samples for various epidemiologic, serologic, and molecular assays for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) studies. It is particularly important for mother-to-infant-transmission studies of affected individuals living in remote areas. We have developed a real-time PCR method to detect HIV type 1...

Capture and Ligation Probe-PCR (CLIP-PCR) for Molecular Screening, with Application to Active Malaria Surveillance for Elimination.

BACKGROUND Malaria control programs have achieved remarkable success during the past decade. Nonetheless, sensitive and affordable methods for active screening of malaria parasites in low-transmission settings remain urgently needed. METHODS We developed a molecular screening method, capture and ligation probe-PCR (CLIP-PCR), which achieved the sensitivity of reverse-transcription PCR but eli...

Dried blood spots improve access to HIV diagnosis and care for infants in low-resource settings.

Effective health care delivery to the majority of perinatally exposed infants worldwide, including those enrolled in prevention of mother-to-child transmission programs, is hampered by lack of access to an HIV diagnosis in infancy. Dried blood spot collection from young infants for centralized HIV polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing is attainable in low-resource settings, provided PCR metho...

Use of Blood Smears and Dried Blood Spots for Polymerase Chain Reaction–Based Detection and Quantification of Bacterial Infection and Plasmodium falciparum in Severely Ill Febrile African Children

Molecular approaches offer a means of testing archived samples stored as dried blood spots in settings where standard blood cultures are not possible. Peripheral blood films are one suggested source of material, although the sensitivity of this approach has not been well defined. Thin blood smears and dried blood spots from a severe pediatric malaria study were assessed using specific polymeras...

RAPID COMMUNICATION Evidence-Based Path to Newborn Screening for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Objective: Creatine kinase (CK) levels are increased on dried blood spots in newborns related to the birthing process. As a marker for newborn screening, CK in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) results in false-positive testing. In this report, we introduce a 2-tier system using the dried blood spot to first assess CK with follow-up DMD gene testing. Methods: A fluorometric assay based upon the...
